Stop this now. Every day counts. Every job matters. Contact your senators, congressperson, governor, and White House and tell them to keep at risk people at home, open all schools and get the country back to work before the economy and our way of life is decimated.
Last week around 140,000 Ohioans applied for unemployment. The previous week it was around 5,000.
Businesses and entrepreneurs are not buying the government stimulus package as a means to keep employees. Why would they take on debt (low interest or otherwise) or count on tax deferrals (for revenues that may never come) with no end to this government driven mess in sight, all while watching their businesses and individual nest eggs collapse?
Is COVID-19 tragic? Yes.
But are the actions of our government to stop it worth forfeiting our economy and way of life? No.
So what’s the answer? Get as close to normal as we can and do it immediately.
How? It’s simple: mandate that seniors and high-risk people stay home. Everyone else gets back to work and school while being mindful of common sense mitigation measures and holding each other accountable to reduce the spread.
The policy makers and pundits who think this won’t work are wrong, just like they have been so many times before on so many important matters.
Everyone knows how serious this is. Talk to some of the 140,000 Ohioans who are now out of work because of your decisions. Talk to the business owners having to make those tough choices. They all say get us to proximate normal now before it’s too late.
And we’ll do our part. We the workers of America produce, create, service, heal, educate, etc.
The policy makers and pundits are on the sidelines calling shots, and they are wrong to annihilate our economy in fear of this illness.
About 16% of the US population is over 65 or high risk. Mandate that these and other high-risk citizens with respiratory or other susceptible illness stay home. Do you honestly think those age 65+ folks aren’t terrified with the current state of their retirement savings right now? They’d gladly stay home to recoup the losses to their nest eggs. Empower Americans with a solution that helps the entire population through productivity and responsibility, instead of paralyzing us with fear that in the end will only create more devastation.
Clear and direct measures to help the workers, businesses and the economy have been defined, but our bickering House and Senate are unable in some cases and unwilling in others to get it done. As usual their distorted view of reality and need to politicize everything is stopping progress, even in this economic crisis of their own making. It’s disgusting. Make some noise, fellow citizens — before it’s too late.
Because, sadly, why would the policy makers and pundits change course now? This is why they exist: to be in front of cameras, making tough decisions, responding to and reporting on everything in real time. Citizens are glued to their screens because they’re out of work or concerned for their livelihoods. The policy makers and pundits won’t change course unless we make them. We need to make as much noise about this as we have any of the other movements our citizens have successfully brought to the forefront. Every day counts. Every job matters. Contact your senators, congressperson, governor, and White House and tell them to keep at risk people at home, open all schools and get the country back to work before the economy and our way of life is decimated.

And if you agree with the need to get our country back to work and apply a more common sense approach to mitigating the damage done by COVID-19, please share this piece with your friends, family, and if you’re among those lucky enough to still have some — your co-workers, too.
The above commentary was written by a business leader in the tech industry who sits in Cleveland, Ohio. Like many, he has watched the layoffs already begin and good people lose their jobs as our nation and government respond to this pandemic from a place of fear and panic instead of smart and thoughtfully informed decision-making. His proposal is supported by many who view it as a far more easily implemented, far less destructive, and far more common sense approach to protecting the elderly and vulnerable without overburdening our healthcare communities. Or decimating economy and leaving damage in its wake that will take years to recover from.
